Healthy eating for children
We all know that eating five portions of fruit or vegetables a day is of paramount importance in maintaining health.  However, as every parent knows, it can be hard to get children to eat their five portions or to vary the type of fruit and vegetables that they consume!  With supermarkets stocking a wide variety of exotic fruit and veg it’s no longer a case of bananas and sprouts, but even with star fruit and sweet potato children can be choosy.

There are a myriad of ways to gain your child’s interest in healthy eating.  One of these is to enrol your child’s help in preparing food – there are many recipe books written especially for children with interesting snacks and meals for them to create with your help, or they can help when you are cooking for the family or by filling their own school lunchbox.  Most children like nothing better than getting their hands dirty in the kitchen, using scales and spatulas and seeing how food is prepared and served - arranging food on the plates into marvellous faces and fun creations can also add an element of fun and pride in their work!

With summer here, there’s still some time to grow certain vegetables and fruit in the garden (or to start planning for next year’s sowing season!).  Even a small garden or patio can accommodate a potted tomato plant so children can watch the fruit grow and, hopefully, find out how delicious it all is!
